- Abstract
This paper deals with cooperation activities between literary translators and other professionals
and compares the current situation in Germany in this regard with the situation in the former
GDR. A theoretical comparison based on relevant academic literature led to the assumption that
literary translators in the GDR had felt more satisfied in their cooperation with other professionals than their counterparts in modern-day Germany. This may – at least partially – have
been the result of the many changes which have been seen in their working environment. In an
empirical study carried out to verify this assumption, episodic interviews were conducted with
five literary translators who had worked as such in the GDR and who are still working in this field
today. The results obtained from this study did not confirm this assumption. However, they do
illustrate several changes in the working environment of these translators and provide
information about their cooperation activities with other professionals – both in the former GDR
and in contemporary Germany.- Organisation(s)
